La manzana del genio. Mandrágora (Mandragora spp.) y magia negra en la tradición árabo-islámica clásica

Resumen

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo estudiar las conexiones existentes entre la mandrágora (Mandragora spp.) y la magia negra en el contexto de la tradición árabo-islámica clásica. Para ello se analizan los escasos y fragmentarios datos que al respecto se han conservado en algunos tratados árabes de agricultura, farmacología, toxicología y magia. Entre estas fuentes ocupan un lugar especialmente destacado al-Filāḥa al-nabaṭiyya y el Kitāb al-Sumūm, obras ambas presuntamente traducidas por Ibn Waḥšiyya (m. 296/909) del arameo al árabe —según él mismo a partir de sendas antiguas fuentes babilónicas—, y Ġāyat al-ḥakīm wa-aḥaqq al-natiǧatayn bi-l-taqdīm, cuya autoría suele atribuirse al andalusí Maslama al-Qurṭubī (m. 353/964). El análisis de la información recogida en estas obras pone de manifiesto que igual que ocurrió con las creencias que conectan la mandrágora con la magia blanca o natural, las creencias y prácticas que asocian la planta con la magia negra también parecen haber tenido sus orígenes en las tradiciones mágicas caldeo-babilónica y greco-egipcia de filiación pseudo-hermética. Asimismo, dicho análisis revela que estas creencias no solo parecen haber tenido eco en los textos de los eruditos sino también en el imaginario colectivo de, al menos, algunas poblaciones árabes musulmanas y de otras etnias y confesiones, perviviendo dichas creencias en algunos casos hasta nuestros días. Por último, cabe concluir —a tenor de las informaciones que registran las fuentes árabes— que en el ámbito de la civilización árabo-islámica clásica la mandrágora parece haber sido objeto de un uso real y efectivo como ingrediente de diferentes compuestos utilizados en rituales de magia negra.
