In this paper we seek to think about some of the factors that bring about the literary production (adab) in al-Andalus during the second half of the 5th/11th century and, more specifically, to put some questions about the relationships between a literary model full of cryptic codes - pointing out the special prominence of the private correspondence (al-rasā'il al-ijwāniyyāt)- and the adoption of this system as a private language on the part of a political and cultural elite which historical context we try to delimit.
