Abstract

The historiographic analysis of the city of Bobastro, founded by ‛Umar b. Ḥafṣūn (Mesas de Villaverde, Árdales-Málaga) allows one to characterize this enclave as one of the most complex in al-Andalus. According to the documentation we have, no other settlement of the Emirate period was described with such varied terminology (ṣakhra, jabal, madīna, ḥiṣn, qal‛a, qaṣaba, ma‛qil), an eloquent testimony to a complex topographic reality. However, few of these terms offer an unambigous description. With the triumph of the Islamic state personified in the Caliphate of Cordova, the status of Bobastro changed radically from what was the see of the ḥafṣūnīs to an inconsequential refuge of some of the governors of Málaga.
