Between the ninth and twelfth centuries various types of artistic activity linked Tunisia with al-Andalus, Egypt and Sicily. More specifically, this artistic exchange consisted of funeral columns, mosques constructed in nine compartments and court gardens characterised by one large pool. This article studies the documentation available and assesses the possible sources and functions of these typological models. The role of Ifrīqiya is then posited as the origin of the models or either as the place where these models were formally established to then serve as influential for al-Andalus, Egypt and Sicily.
