Xavier de Planhol's new book L'Islam et la mer represents the first comprehensive effort in Western scholarship to asses the role of the sea in the Islamic world. Avoiding such matters as details of battles, the author focuses instead on broad cultural and intellectual paradigms and comes to the conclusion that "Islam is incompatible with the sea", and explores the logn-term implications of this antipathy in Islamic history from pre-Islamic times to the present. His basic thesis, however, can be challenged from various perspectives, and this review essay suggests ways in which the material he cites, as well as other importan sources not used in the book, can be interpreted to reach very different conclusions.
