The aim of this article is to contribute to a more comprehensive knowledge of the socio-economical history of al-Andalus and particularly the topic of involuntary poverty. Andalusian proverbial literature provides a wealth of information concerning different aspects of this topic, such as the conception of poverty, its causes and consequences, and the different ways of offsetting it on the part of the affected and their neighbors. The Andalusian proverbs collections offer a series of established images of the poor and their situation, which allows us to understand the effects that this social reality was provoking among the population. From this point of view, this type of documentation advances our knowledge about the social practices in al-Andalus, which suggest the moral and ethical values of this society.
