Abstract

This article discusses from a historiographical point of view the chapter on the Umayyads of al-Andalus included in two of the most representative works of the Mamluk period: al-Nuwayrī’s Nihāyat al-arab and al-ʿUmarī’s Masālik al-abṣār, both of which are framed within the so-called “Mamluk encyclopaedism”. First, the main characteristics of the written production of this period are presented, as well as the circumstances that shaped them. Subsequently, some general considerations about these authors and their respective works are offered. All this will provide a general overview of the cultural context in which the works under study were produced. Finally, we proceed to the critical historiographic analysis of the information on the Umayyads of al-Andalus included in the two works, with special attention to their sources. This analysis sheds further light on the process of textual transmission in Arabic historiography, in addition to expanding our knowledge of some relevant Andalusī sources that are partial or totally lost, as is the case with Ibn Ḥayyān’s Muqtabis.
