The present article deals with a historiographical analysis of different versions found in Arabic chronicles of one of the stories of the conquest of al-Andalus. Their examination leads to the conclusion that the origin of the story comes from the now lost work of the Cordobán historian Ahmad al-Rāzī. Many later authors —among them, the compiler Akhbār Majmū‛a— used this text, either directly or through intermediate sources. The interest of this analysis for the study Akhbār Majmū‛a is clear. This anonymous chronicle of uncertain date is, in fact, a compilation of earlier historical texts, and not, as some have held, a text employing primary sources. The text analyzed in this article was also used by Christian authors and it may be found in works such as the Crónica de 1344 and De Rebus Hispanie by Jiménez de Rada.
